On The Bright Side

We do try to bring you good news every day. We'll look back at some of our favorites in an 11 News special.

I'M POSITIVE WE TRY TO BE POSITIVE

A couple of months ago someone left a comment on our facebook page.  Here's part of it.

" I think that the news media needs to quit pooring (sic) all of the doom and gloom in to peoples minds and find only positive uplifting stories to report on. STOP the negativity. "

I get the point of the comment.  For months now we've made a concerted effort during 11 News editorial meetings to find stories every day that are not negative or frightening or discouraging.  We usually present them under the banner, "On The Bright Side".  We started doing it as a direct response to viewers who told us they want more positive news.  I believe they do, I'd like to read more positive news on the air.  However, there is a lot of interest in knowing about some of the bad things that have happened in our community.  As I write this on a Sunday afternoon, the top 10 most-viewed stories on our web site are as follows. You could argue that if we offered more positive stories they might fill up parts of that top 10.  That maybe true, and we'll keep trying to include more good news on the web too, not just on the air.

  1. Rollover Accident on I 25 Sends Texas Family to Hospital
  2. Wedding Reception Brawl Lands Two Men in the ER
  3. Two Shooting Victims Show Up At Memorial ER
  4. Got a News Tip for KKTV 11 News?
  5. Confusing Calls Mislead Police On Shooting Location
  6. Colorado Springs Teen Dies After Tragic Skiing Accident
  7. Driver Crashes Down 20 Foot Ditch
  8. Local Reaction To Senate Voting On Reform Bill
  9. Jet Lands Safely In Denver After Hydraulic Problem
  10. Pueblo West Power Outage

The other side of that coin is that when things go right it's often not newsworthy.  When the expected happens there's often not a lot of interest.  So when we find stories to bring you  "on the bright  side" they need to be extraordinary...and they are.  We're putting together a special edition of 11 News called "On the Bright Side."  It's a look back at some of the most moving, inspiring and uplifting stories we've brought you in the past year.  It's not all of them, there isn't time, but it's a good cross-section.  I've been looking at the final rundown for the show.  We've got kids who called 911 to save family members, we've got surprise elements of soldiers' homecomings.  We're even taking another look at free surgeries performed by a group of doctors who just wanted to help those who needed care and couldn't afford it.

The special runs on Thanksgiving Day at 11am.  Watch it with your family if you can, record it to check it out later.   It's a good reminder that people in our community do good things, and that we try to tell you about as many of them as we can.  Bad things will continue to happen, and we'll continue to report them. It's how we all better understand our own community and the people in it.  As some of our stories reveal in the special, from those bad things often spring the good ones.  Those are perhaps the best stories of all.

So we'll report what happens on 11 News, good or bad, and whenever we can we'll set aside a few minutes to we can all go, together, to the Bright Side.

We'll talk again soon.

Don
