Any time is a good time to give. We're not in the holidays, there's been no natural disaster, but there is a tremendous need. That's why what we're all about to do is so important.
All of us at 11 News are asking all of you to be part of a food drive we're doing next week for the Care and Share Food Bank. The economy is making it all but impossible for some families to put food on the table.
We just ran a story this week on 11 News about the staggering increase in the number of Colorado children living in poverty. According to a study by the Colorado Children's Campaign, the numbers went up 85 percent between 2000 and 2007. 85 percent! And that's before the economy really started to tumble.
According to Care and Share, 40 percent of those who receive food from the program are WORKING families. These are not people who won't get a job. They have jobs, and still can't afford what their children need.
57 percent of their clients say they've actually had to choose between paying for food or paying for medical care.
No parent should ever have to make that choice. No child should ever go hungry, not in Colorado, not in the 21st century.
Next Thursday through Sunday please do what you can. Just a few food items can make a difference. You can drop them off at American Furniture Warehouse in the Springs or Pueblo. Then you can walk away knowing that because of what you did, a child may get through one more day without having to go to bed hungry.
We'll be talking about it on 11News with all the details you need.
Any time is a good time to give. Now is a great time to give.
We'll talk again soon.
