An import from England could Stomp all over the competition at the Tony Awards.

KKTV-11 News is airing the Tony Awards tonight from 7 to 10. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you watch, watch out for this.

"Billy Elliot The Musical" is nominated for a record-tying 15 awards. "The Producers" had the same number back in 2001.

About three years ago my Mother was in London, and as you do in the English capitol, she went to see show. Billy Elliot was all the rage, critics liked it audiences loved it. Mom came home raving about it.

A year or so after that, I was in London, and, as you do, I went to see a show. On Mom's recommendation I picked Billy Elliot, and I really didn't expect to like it much.

It was outstanding. It's based on the movie from 2000, the story of a kid from a tough coal-mining family in a tough coal-mining village who wants to forgo the traditional family career path to study ballet. It's set against the all-too-real devastating miners strike in Northern England in the 1980's. The economic struggle back then was a little like what so many families in lots of countries are facing now.

It's funny, gritty (very adult language at times-that's how those people talked at that time in that place-they probably still do) and it's very moving. A few minutes on-line will show you that critics say it's sappy and predictable. Maybe a little, but I don't mind being moved, even when I know what's coming. The music is great. I'm not a dance fan, but I liked that too.

To see a 12 or 13 year old kid carry a show for 3 hours is amazing. The three who rotate in and out of the title role in New York are all nominated tonight.

I don't know anything about the other shows that are nominated. I'm sure that they're all good, just to be considered. I'm also sure that none of them is better than Billy Elliot.

Analysts say it could win about a dozen awards. I hope so. If you go to New York or London, give it a try. You'll feel better coming out of it than you did going in. Plus, depending on what happens tonight, on KKTV 11-News, you might see one of the most honored shows ever!

Go Billy!

We'll talk again soon.
