Not a chance for any chants of U.S.A in this one.
Let's hope this gets their worst performance out of the way.
Our national soccer team was completely outclassed by Costa Rica Wednesday. They ran circles around our guys on the bumpy, worn artificial turf at the Saprissa Stadium in San Jose, Costa Rica. The U.S. hasn't won there since 2000, and a road game in a soccer crazy country is always tough, but wow, this one was horrible.
Costa Rica scored in the 2nd minute, added another before the quarter hour and dominated the U.S for all but a few minutes early in the 2nd half. The final was 3-1. The U.S. scored on a very late penalty kick.
So who cares? Everyone in Costa Rica, and Mexico, and Honduras, and El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago. Those are all the countries that compete against us for an treasured chance to go to the World Cup finals next summer in South Africa. This win puts Costa Rica at the top of the table in qualifying for our region. The U.S. is in second, and should still qualify with several games remaining. The top 3 go, and the 4th finisher gets a chance to enter a playoff with another region for a spot.
So who cares? Plenty of Americans, but maybe not enough. We've got our sports, and I love 'em all. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey..all great. Soccer (football) is the world's game. Maybe you say, "They can have it." if so, I'm surprised you read this far, please keep reading.
We've come a long way in the world of soccer, from embarrassment, to legitimate contender. The U.S. is capable of beating the top teams in the world on a good day. Not on a bad day, not the way they played against Costa Rica, but when everyone's healthy and everything clicks..we've got a great team, with a good chance of doing well in South Africa.
The U.S plays Honduras in another qualifier Saturday in Chicago. If you've never watched, give it a try. Learn names like Donovan, Howard, Dempsey, Beasley, Onyewu, Adu. Cheer for them Saturday so we can all cheer for them again next summer.
We'll talk again soon.
