It all "Boyle"s Down to Talent
Susan Boyle is a good singer, but not a great one.
Britain has spoken. Britain has talent, and an 11-man dance troupe has more of it than the singing sensation Susan Boyle.
I took an interest in this whole thing because I happened to be in England, visiting old family friends when her first audition aired on TV there, and we happened to have it on the right channel at the right time. The living room where we watched was a microcosm of the studio audience. She was interviewed, we only half paid attention. She walked awkwardly onto the stage and seemed unable to grasp the fact that the judges were ready to buzz her hastily off the stage. We all rolled our eyes, just like the in-studio audience members. For some of them it almost seemed to reach the level of disdain for this woman.
Then Susan Boyle sang. We all paid attention. The expectation was nothing, but she delivered an inspiring, entertaining performance.
I came back to Colorado and couldn't believe that the Susan Boyle buzz was as hot in the U.S. as it had been over there. For weeks we saw the updates, the interviews, the profiles, all of it just as awkward as the moment she walked on stage. But we all remembered how well she sang.
Then she sang again in the semi-final. She cracked the first note (that could happen to anyone) and rushed through some passages where she may have felt insecure. She did hit the big notes pretty well, another credible performance. The difference is, that by that time, the expectation was high, very high. There was no way she could match it.
She sang again in the final, did a pretty good job with the same song she used for the first audition. It wasn't the same, never could be.
She's been criticized for her behavior lately, but who could possibly stand up to all that scrutiny for all those weeks. I talked to another friend in England today. He told me many there (including his family) have kind of grown sick of her, or at least the hype that hasn't stopped. That's not her fault.
Her first appearance is still inspiring to watch. She's the underdog who wins over an entire auditorium of skeptics with just a few notes.
Go to youtube and watch "Diversity", the act that beat her. They're great at what they do.
Susan Boyle is a great story, but just a good singer.
We'll talk again soon.
