Are You A Sports Jinx?

The Nuggets' ousting from the Conference Finals is disappointing to all of us. Do your favorite teams tend to do well most of the time? Mine don't. Is it me?

Do you ever feel like you're a jinx to your favorite sports teams?

I'm a sports fan. I used to be a sports fanatic, all but obsessed with the teams I followed. I've scaled back a bit but I still like to see my favorites do well.

I just talked to sports anchor/reporter Jesse Kurtz about what it was like to walk into the Nuggets locker room after that disappointing loss Friday night. He said it was terrible. The Nuggets are just the latest team I like to come up short. It was a great season, but it feels like it could have been even better with a couple of breaks here or there.

So here are my favorites, some of them are probably the same as yours.

The Rockies: World series two years ago, couldn't quite win it all. Hurting now.

The Broncos: A couple of Superbowl wins in the late 90's, awesome, struggled since.

The CU Buffs: (still a season ticket holder) It's been rough to be a buff for a while. Hopefully getting better.

The Avalanche: A couple of Stanley Cups, awesome, struggled since.

Liverpool Football Club: I'm a huge fan of English Football (soccer) Liverpool just finished second to Manchester United (Boo!!!) by 4 lousy points. If just 2 of Liverpool's 13 draws had been wins, they'd have tied on points and won the English Premier League on goal difference. Again, close, but no glory.

My point is this. Do you ever feel like the teams you hate always do well while the teams you love struggle, and that it's somehow your fault for liking them? It's irrational to think that any of these teams are aware of any of us as individual fans and that their success somehow rides on our dedication to the team. It's also human nature to personalize the success or failure of our favorites.

Our studio floor director Spike always blames Sports Director John Owens for "jinxing" the Rockies if he writes a script early, stating they won, and then (as so often happens) they go on to lose, and he has to change the script before the news. The game's outcome has nothing to do with John's script, but he gets some blame.

Maybe it would be easier just to become a fan of the Yankees and the Lakers and Manchester United (Boooo!), that way you'd always be in contention. But anyone can do that!

Bottom line, we've all got to be patient and enjoy the success when it happens. It will again some time.

Maybe the Nuggets will make it all the way next year. I won't say too much though, wouldn't want to jinx them!

We'll talk again soon.
