So Long Shannon (Don Ward)

It's always tough when someone moves on.

It doesn't seem like it's been six years!

That's how long ago Shannon Brinias and I joined the team at KKTV 11 News.  Here we are below with our teammates Jesse Kurtz (L) and Brian Bledsoe (R).

Shannon came from Seattle and I came from Denver. We each had nearly 20 years of experience as reporters and weekend anchors and weekend morning anchors and evening fill-in anchors at various stations all over the country.  We were both ready for the different challenges that come with being a main anchor. Over these past six years we've been on the air together for major breaking news events, and for everyday newscasts too. It's probably been 3000 to 3200 newscasts, so maybe 1500 or 1600  hours of live television, about two feet away from each other!  It's been great!  We had many more on-camera hours together shooting promotional spots and special reports.

Early on in our partnership we even went to New York to interview Katie Couric just as she was about to take over the CBS Evening News.  OK, that didn't really work out but she was very nice to us and it was a cool trip.

Just as important as what we did on the air was what we did off the air.  Shannon and I made hundreds of public appearances together at community events all over Southern Colorado.  We spent hundreds of hours together helping groups and organizations celebrate their success and try to achieve even more.  The groups get all the credit for all they do, we just showed up to be the emcees.

In 2011 KKTV 11 News was recognized for all the outstanding philanthropy work we've done.  Shannon played a huge role in that. I'm very proud of the work we did together to help the community where all of us live. Take a look.

To end I'll go back to the beginning.

This last picture was taken right after the American Heart Association's Heart Ball in 2006.  Shannon and I hadn't even appeared on the air yet when we appeared as the emcees for that event! Brian Bledsoe was brand new too, but he had made his KKTV debut.

It's been hard work, it's been tough, it's been fun. It's been a good tour together on the air in Southern Colorado.  Shannon helped build what we have here now and what I will continue with the fine team she leaves behind.  I can't blame her for moving on to be a main anchor in Sacramento.  It happens in this business...a lot.  It's a much larger market and it puts her close to a lot of her family members.  (Mine are almost all here so I'm afraid Southern Colorado is stuck with me!)

The best part of all this is that we all talk about how time flies when you 're having fun. The years flashed by, so we must have been having a wonderful time in a very competitive and often difficult business.

So best of luck to Shannon Brinias!

It doesn't seem like it's been six years!

We'll talk again soon.
