Thanks to Debbie for letting us know that an old scam using the Wells Fargo name has popped up again.
She received an automated message telling her that her account was "limited." She was asked to input the last four numbers of her social security number right away. Debbie knew better.
This scheme is similar to one I covered back in July.
Lin Brock of Colorado Springs told me about text messages she had received on her phone. She was told that her Wells Fargo card had been closed and she needed to contact the bank by calling a California number right away.
The next message was a warning about her Cricket wireless account. She wasn't a Wells Fargo customer so she wasn't concerned about the first message, but she was a Cricket customer. She later called Cricket and learned the information was bogus.
We later discovered Lin was just one of hundreds who had received the messages.
Just remember if you're ever alerted about fraud... look up the company's number yourself. Don't use a number provided to you or click on a link in an email. The bad guys will be waiting.
Fraud departments for credit card companies may ask you to call them, but they'll never ask for your account or other personal information. They already have it.
Be suspicious of any call you get and protect yourself by originating an inquiry yourself.

As a postscript, I just checked Facebook and saw that Kim also received the same automated message as Debbie.
She is a Verizon wireless customer and was told this scam may be targeting Verizon customers. We'll look into it and let you know if Verizon's system was compromised and how it's responding.
