Lepto-what? (Betty Sexton)

It's considered a rare bacterial infection, but some folks in El Paso County have contracted leptospirosis. How do you get it? It turns out your pet's exposure could make you sick and land you in the hospital!

Whenever we have a Call for Action:  Call an Expert Week I learn something new.  I never heard of leptospirosis till Dr. John Sudduth with Northwest Animal Hospital visited.

He says it's considered rare... and Hawaii has the most number of cases of leptospirosis... but there have been some cases of the baterial infection in El Paso County.

If your pet drinks water from a puddle...  which has infected urine... it could be transmitted to you through an open cut or wound.  It can lead to liver disease in dogs and land a human in the hospital.

The good news... there is a vaccine for it.  Another reason to keep your pet's vaccinations up to date.... especially if you're planning on taking your furry friends with you on a Memorial Day trip.
