Master gardeners with the El Paso County CSU Extension Service were nice enough to give up their time to talk about troubled turf and stressed out trees on Wednesday. Turns out aphids and bank mites are a real problem right now. Aphids are the tiny green insects which suck up the sap from plants. Master gardeners say they're fragile, so they're easy to rinse off. They suggest shooting a stready stream of water on your trees for a few days to get rid of them. As for bank mites or spider mites, they suggest making sure your lawn is well watered, aerated, and fertilized... using fertilizer at the right time and at the right amount. For any lawncare question call the Colorado Master Gardener Help Desk. It's open Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 p.m. The number to dial (719) 520-7684.
