Driveway Paving Scams (Betty Sexton)

Maybe it's a sign of our tough economic times... but a scam that used to materialize when ole' man winter made way for spring... is now surfacing before our first snowfall.

Maybe it's a sign of our tough economic times... but a scam that used to materialize when ole' man winter made way for spring... is now surfacing before our first snowfall.

I'm talking about crooks who drive around ... knocking on doors with a little leftover asphalt or sealant... looking to give you a good deal to repave your driveway.

We've gotten complaints from folks who live in the Black Forest area. They say once they give a crew the "green light" to get to work, they get a knock on the door. They're told their driveways looks beautiful and the jobs are done...  now it's time to pay up.  Only the original agreed upon price... is suddenly much higher.

What's worse... homeowners don't feel comfortable talking about money... because they have nothing in writing. Maybe they misunderstood the quoted price?!  Bottom line, they have no proof what the original cost was.

On top of that... after they pay and the crew is headed to the bank with the check... the homeowners discover they're not happy with the quality of the work.

If you get a knock at the door from contractors... don't be pressured to hire them. No matter who you choose, do your homework. Ask for references and check them out. Also, ask if they're licensed to do work in our area. If they're not local, remember they won't be around later if you need them.

The Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado has several licensed, experienced contractors who repave driveways. They'd be happy to give you a quote, show you their work, and make sure you're informed and happy about the finished product.
