If you run a business, own rental property, or are involved with a non profit... you may've gotten a misleading notice in the mail. I know I got one... and we've heard from countless Southern Colorado business owners who have received one, too.
It's from a group called Corporate Controllers Unit... or CCU out of Las Vegas.
It looks very official with a seal, a list of Colorado statutes, and your company information. In big letter it asks for $225!
CCU is offering, not requiring to file your company's periodic report with the Colorado Secretary of State's office, but its mailer looks like it's from the state... not a private business.
Authorities believe the whole idea is to create confusion... so business owners simply drop CCU a check... for something they can do themselves online for just $10!
The Colorado Secretary of State and Colorado Attorney General's office call it a scam. Officials believe it's deceptive. We're told U.S. postal inspectors are working to shut them down.
Their advice... throw away the notice and don't respond to it.
The mailer does say... this is strictly an offer, not a bill or an invoice... but it certainly looks like an official document. Don't waste your time with it... toss it!
We tried to track down CCU in Las Vegas as well as the company president, Maxim Kitaev.
Those who are in the same office complex at 5510 South Fort Apache Road in Las Vegas say the young Russian and his colleagues have been renting space there since last September.
They say they don't know anything about their business... only that they're paying their rent on time and are visiting their office about four times a week.
We'll keep you posted about any new developments. In the meantime... toss this one!
