It's that time of year when the weather gets warmer and crooks come calling. Just today a Colorado Springs woman answered a knock at her door and found a man who claimed he needed to inspect her roof for the insurance company.
Thank goodness Karen's radar was up. She tells me she lives in the Old Colorado City area, just south of Colorado Avenue. Karen says she was immediately suspicious and let the man know he wasn't getting inside.
Karen says the man had a clipboard and flashed a business card. She describes him as a white man about 6'2", fair and thin. She says she instinctively knew he wasn't qualified to do any kind of roof inspection.
Karen says he mentioned State Farm Insurance and claimed he was supposed to examine the roof for State Farm... but her landlord told her... that isn't her insurance company.
Karen also was alarmed because the man was so persistent. He wouldn't leave. Karen says she shut the door and then called her neighbors to warn them. She also alerted her neighborhood watch group. I told her I would help spread the word, too.
Not everyone who goes door to door is a crook, but be careful of folks saying they need to get into your house. Every spring we warn you about crews with some leftover asphalt who want to seal your driveway, landscapers who want to plug your yard, and unlicensed contractors wanting to give you a new roof.
It pays to do your homework. Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau or the regional building department. Also, feel free to call me. I will do a little digging.
If you're concerned for your safety, don't hesitate to dial 9-1-1. Colorado Springs Police will investigate. Bottom line, you have to protect yourself and your wallet.
