Beware of Bogus Appeal for Relief Funds for Japan (Betty Sexton)

Crooks know a lot of folks are reaching for their wallets, donating to relief efforts in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami. That's why they're circulating emails... masquerading as the Salvation Army. Their goal is to snag your contributions.

Before you become a donor to any charity or cause check out the request first.  You may find your dollars aren't going where you intended.

After seeing video of the devastation in Japan, you may want to help.  Don't be fooled by an email claiming to be from the Salvation Army.  It's just a crook hoping to fool you.

The Salvation Army IS NOT soliciting donations via email.  It has four methods of retrieving funds.

1.  Texting the words "JAPAN" or "QUAKE" to 80888.  You're then charged $10.

2.  Dialing by phone to 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

3.  Donating online at the legitimate website:  SalvationArmyUSA.org

4.   Mailing a check to "Japan Earthquake Relief" to:  The Salvation Army World Service Office, International Relief Fund, P.O.Box 630728, Baltimore, MD  21263-0728.

If you ever have questions about the legitimacy of a request, call the organization first.  You can reach the Salvation Army Intermountain Divisional Headquarters at (303) 861-4833.

The crooks know you want to help and have launched a clever campaign to steer your generous donations to them.  Make sure your dollars are going to a legitimate cause, not to a thief looking to line his pockets.
