Sappy Email Gets Your Attention, Don't Let it Scorch Your Wallet (Betty Sexton)

Phony emails have been making the rounds for years. Crooks will say anything to get your attention and your cash. Don't fall for the latest one which was written by someone as talented as J.K. Rowling, the Harry Potter author.

I used to tell people... you can tell you've received a phony email... by looking for spelling or grammatical errors.

Now criminals have stepped up their game.  They seem to be using Spellcheck and  taking their cues from popular authors who know how to write.

The latest phishing attempt will look like an email from a friend or family member.  They don't know their account has been hacked!   It will start out, "I'm writing this with tears in my eyes.  We went on vacation to (fill in the blank) and were mugged at gunpoint!"

The email will also talk abut being helpless and needing cash immediately!  No surprise there.

Don't buy one word of the fast-paced, gripping read.  It's a J.K.Rowling-wannabe whose goal is to get you to wire funds overseas.

It's kind of like the "Grandma, Grandpa Scam."  Always check in with the person who supposedly is in trouble.  You'll find he or she is just fine.  They'll be horrified to find their account's been hacked... but they won't want you to be victimized by a ruthless crook... who stepped up his writing skills to wiggle his way into your wallet.

If you flunk this one, you could be sent to Hogwarts!
