Prize Information Bureau Bah, Humbug!

This time of year you expect to find holiday party invitations and Christmas cards in your mailbox, not correspondence from crooks. But just because you're in the holiday spririt.. don't expect the bad guys are, too. They don't turn into Santa's elves just because it's December. They're looking to snag your cash to do their own holiday shopping.

Thanks to Janice McCreary of Colorado Springs for telling me about a letter which arrived in her mailbox this week. It's from Prize Information Bureau out of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Janice says the URGENT notice told her she had won $3.2 million. All she had to do was pay a transfer fee of $20 and the cash would be hers. Janice knew it was too good to be true and it is. Various authorities have taken action against the company, even issuing restraining orders to prevent it from contacting residents.

Officials with the Better Business Bureau in Las Vegas say they don't believe Prize Information Bureau has a license to do business there.

Remember winners of lotteries and sweepstakes actively participate... meaning they sign up and enter the contests. They aren't contacted out of the blue. Their names aren't randomly drawn from thin air.

Another tip off... if you win a legitimate contest you won't be asked to pay handling fees upfront. Uncle Sam and state officials will eventually contact you to collect taxes, but it's not a condition of winning. Be a smart consumer all year 'round!

If you have any questions, feel free to call or email me.  Ho Ho Ho!!!
