Don't Take Phone Calls for Jamaica

The next time your phone rings, check the caller ID if you have it. Ken Taylor of Colorado Springs was suspicious as soon as he saw this on his phone display: "876-568-5061 JAMAICA."

Ken tells me he received two calls. During the first, the man on the other end explained that he wanted to deliver a check to Ken's house. Ken smelled a rat and said he wasn't interested. In fact, he told the guy... he knew this was a scam... which the man denied.

Shortly afterwards Ken took a second call from Jamaica. The man was more insistent.. which made Ken angry. He told the caller he had already reported his first call to police and if a man showed up at his door... a police officer would arrest him. That worked. The man hung up and hasn't called back since.

The area code 876 is associated with a lot of scams. You might assume just because the number starts with 8... it might be a toll-free call... it isn't. One thing I've learned to do... and it might be helpful for you, too.... I do a google search of a number I don't recognize before taking the call. The information you get there often will help you decide if it's worth taking the call or not. In some cases you can be charged for taking an international call... or worse. Just remember 876--- means Jamaica... and stay away.

Same thing in 2011. David Miller 1-876-287-3613 called yesterday, claiming he would drop by with a check for $750,000. Seems they think offering less money will make it more believable!

I have been getting JAMAICA calls since June! My calls fit the descriptions indicated above, I have tried to insult this foreign speaking person, knowing it is a spam. My latest call was this morning at 5:08AM, he claimes he wants to deliver me a check. Will call me again at 10AM! I am becoming frustrated at how to rid myself of these calls, my earlier response was to tell him to "stick this check where the Sun Doesn't Shine". I plan to tell him to meet me at the Henderson Police Station!

Some fool from an 876 Jamaica number has been calling me since yesterday. I blocked the number; same fool called today, blocked again. Then a number from Michigan popped up on my caller I.D. Blocked it, too. Will have to tell these fools that I have called the police on them.

I had the same thing. A man John Brown, 1 876 560 2338. Thay are asking 5% of tax and well be here at 330hrs Wedesday 23 Sept. 2009. What we con do about it. Thay called again this morning at 6am. How can we do soom thing about it? Iam 73 and my wife 68.

I had the same thing happen to me today. 876-291-1696. Caller id Name was JM Kingston the man I spoke with said his name was Tom Riley. My husband won 2.5 million dollars. I called my local police department to report it. If the man shows up at my door they will be waiting on him. Public Beware !!
