I just checked on another one of those "you just won a bunch of money" scams. These jokers claims you'll get 34,263.30 if you deposit their fake check into your bank account and wire them back fees and taxes... just $3,426.33. The name of this one is Winners Circle Sweepstakes. We checked with the company whose name is on the check, Kress Financial Services, and learned the authentic-looking check is as phoney as a $3 bill. That means if you deposit the check you'll be charged for a bounced check fee... and if you wire money to the crooks... you're out that cash as well.
I did a little digging and found the company's not located in Houston, Texas like it claims... but is headquartered in Oakville, Ontario... so there's no hope of local authorities tracking down the bad guys... since their authority doesn't extend into Canada.
Thanks to Mary Beth Rufin of Colorado Springs for sending me this mailer.
Here's my new idea... whenever you get a sweepstakes check for a contest you never entered... drop it off or mail it to me at the station. The address: Betty Sexton, KKTV 11 News, 3100 North Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80907. I'm going to recycle it ... and put together a big mural. We'll show those criminals we're doing something good with their junk!
