Beware of Offer from Union Workers Credit Services

Every week I get at least a dozen phone calls, emails, and letters from folks. They want to know if an offer they've received is bogus or legit. I could put a story together on each and every one... but some of these I've already covered. Instead of being redundant, I thought I would tell you about them on our web channel under this new blog called Betty's Buzz.

Here is one that Dr. Warren Layfield sent me. It's from Union Workers Credit Services. It congratulates you and sends you an application for a Platinum Card with a $10,000 limit, charging just 5% interest annually, even if you've been denied before by Visa or MasterCard. But this is not a major credit card... it's a paper card that can only be used to purchase items in the company's merchandise catalog. On top of that, you have to pay $37 for it.

I'm buzzing on this one because it raises three red flags. Number one, the offer's only good for 22 days. If the offer's good today... it should be good next year, too. Flag Number Two, you have to pay upfront to receive the card. Banks and credit unions will only approve you for a credit card if you meet their criteria. No one can guarantee you approval in exchange for money. And Flag Number Three, it doesn't pass the smell test. A check with the Better Business Bureau shows... close to 350 people have complained about the company for misleading advertising. Others say they paid for the card, but never received it. Before you do business with anyone... check them out.
