Lots of coughing…sound familiar? That's what many local doctors are seeing in their offices. Croup is going around.

That's according to Dr. Alan Garscadden. He's with Colorado Springs Health Partners on the east side of Colorado Springs. He says he's seeing croup in young kids and especially infants. Here's a look at the symptoms: an initial fever of about 101, hoarseness, a runny nose and then a barky cough that is usually worse at night. He says the cough lasts about 3 days.

Croup is also going around the Briargate area. That's according to Dr. Michael Halenkamp also with Colorado Springs Health Partners. Here's what he says you should do: use a humidifier, because dry air can make a cough worse. Give your child warm fluids if he/she is over 4-months old. Warm fluids can help relax vocal chords. Also, never let anyone smoke around your child - that can make croup worse. Dr. Halenkamp also advises sleeping in the same room with your child, just to keep an eye on them. Croup can be a dangerous disease.

Also going around this week... asthmatic bronchitis. Remember, you don't have to have asthma to get it. That's according to Dr. Tom Bartlett with Mountain View Medical Group in the central part of Colorado Springs. It starts like a cold... with a cough, fever, nasal congestion and then it spreads to the chest. That's when you'll notice a foul-smelling cough and wheezing. Dr. Bartlett says asthmatic bronchitis usually requires a nebulizer and steroids.
