Those that started lining up at six in the morning were mostly placeholders. Betty Hadley, a grandmother, was first in line. Even though she was ineligeable to be vaccinated herself, she wanted to make sure her grandchildren were not left out in the cold. By 10 a.m. more than 200 people were waiting to get inside the Event Center at the Colorado State Fairgrounds.
The Pueblo City-County Health Department opened the doors right when they said they would, and families filtered in. The first checkpoint was just 20 feet inside the front door. From there, they went station to station, first filling out paperwork then they were asked detailed medical questions. Everything was designed to ensure only those who qualified for the vaccine received it.
"This is our first high-risk clinic, and as you can see it's been a very successful clinic," says Jody Carrillo, Director of Disease Prevention and Emergency Preparedness. In fact, more than 20,000 people could have been vaccinated Thursday if there would have been enough vaccine. There wasn't.
The clinic started off with just 1,300 doses of vaccine. Some 300 of the nasal spray version was administered only healthy people under the age of 50 who live with or care for children under the age of six months. The remaining 1000 doses would be injected. By 1:00 p.m. 500 vaccinations had occured. By 5:30 p.m. there were about 500 doses left, many of them the nasal spray version.
When it was all said and done, the health department was happy with how smoothly everything went, even if they didn't get an expected shipment of vaccine that would have doubled the available doses. As for next week, they are still planning to hold two clinics, but one is in jeopardy of being cancelled. If that happens, you'll hear about it first on KKTV and right here.
