Senate Finance chairman Max Baucus is hailing the latest cost estimates on a health care bill making its way through his committee.
The Congressional Budget Office analysis says the proposed measure would expand coverage to 94 percent of eligible Americans. The CBO says the measure would cost $829 billion over 10 years.
The preliminary estimate also says the draft bill would reduce federal deficits over a decade, and perhaps beyond.
A White House spokesman says the CBO report "confirms" that health-care reform can happen "without adding a dime to the deficit" and while saving money over the long term.
But ranking Republican Chuck Grassley says the measure will mean hundreds of billions of dollars in new taxes and fees.
The CBO estimate was generally positive about the draft Senate Finance bill, but notes that its analysis doesn't include some costs.
The report paves the way for a committee vote as soon as next week.
