The companies that make over-the-counter cough and cold products say they should not be given to children under the age of 4.

Pediatricians have been sharply critical of how the drug makers were marketing the remedies even though there is little evidence that they work on young children.

The president of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association says the companies are making the voluntarily change "out of an overabundance of caution."

The manufacturers are also adding a warning label to their products telling parents not to give young children antihistamines just to make them sleepy.

Well duh. "Don't sedate your kids because they're getting on your nerves." You think? Not to mention that has a whole we over medicate anyway. There are very, very few medications that actually help an illness rather than just mask a symptom. And none of them are available over the counter. The best thing you can do when your kid is sick is make sure they're comfortable, give them plenty of fluids, rest and love. In studies, placebos have the same affect as the actual medication. Wonder why that is? The body has to work infection out for itself, regardless of what medication you're on. The only exception is in antibiotics which are so over-prescribed that they are becoming obsolete. The best thing to do is stay healthy and prevent illness. If kids aren't pumped up with McDonald's and sugar they're immune systems would be stronger. It's basic physiology. Sugar can reduce immune response by up to 50% because it's got the kid all hopped up in an adrenal response.
