WASHINGTON (AP) -- There's growing evidence that it takes longer to recover from a concussion than thought.
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh tracked 95 high school athletes who had concussions and found those who took part in moderate activity recovered fastest. Moderate activity is described as schoolwork and some routine home chores. Less active patients didn't do as well, and more active patients scored much worse on cognitive tests.
The head of the sports science department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says, "No two concussions are the same." It remains unclear how much time is needed to heal, and how much activity is OK.
It's also unclear why women take longer to recover from a concussion than men.
