A rare study of the drug contained in "magic mushrooms" is providing some interesting results that could lead to better treatment for addicts and others.

Scientists say psilocybin appears to have had a remarkable impact on the feelings of those who took the illegal drug as part of a research project several years ago.

When scientists surveyed volunteers 14 months after they took the drug, most said they were still feeling and behaving better because of the experience. Two-thirds of them also said the drug had produced one of the five most spiritually significant experiences they'd ever had.

Researchers say the drug could prove useful in the treatment of alcoholism and drug addition. It may also help seriously ill patients dealing with psychological distress.

Experts emphasize that people SHOULD NOT try psilocybin on their own. Even in the controlled setting of the laboratory, nearly a third of participants felt significant fear while under the effects of the drug.
