National Women's Health Week begins Monday, May 19th. The El Paso County Health Department says it only takes a few simple steps to live a longer and healthier life.

Nearly 40% of women in El Paso County report that they did not have a pap test in the last year, and only about 67% of women over age 50 had an annual mammogram.

Health experts say scheduling preventive-care appointments is one of the most important things you can do to take care of your health. They're encouraging all women to make those appointments in the next 90 days. If you can't afford such tests, the health department may be able to help arrange affordable breast or cervical cancer screenings.

Officials with the health department also say that staying healthy is more than just getting exams; they suggest staying active, eating well, finding time for yourself and connecting with others. Experts say these are all small things that can make a big difference in your health and well-being.

Health experts also add that staying active doesn't always mean strenuous workout; do something you enjoy like walking, swimming, riding a bicycle or working in the garden. As long as it's daily, there's still some benefit.

Eating a good diet is tough, but health officials say it's easier when you start simple; try to start making at least one healthy food choice per day.
