Doctors may now have a better way to help parents save premature babies. In past studies, the chief factor of survival was the number of weeks the baby was able to develop in the womb.

A new study released in the New England Journal of Medicine shows other factors are also important. Some of the factors include gender, babies without a twin, and babies who's mothers where treated with steroids to hasten the lung development.

Researchers say that girl babies have a better chance of surviving premature birth with out serious health complications than their male counterparts. Babies who are twins have a harder time developing than non-twin babies.

The findings may help doctors determine the best treatment for premature babies.
