The Centers for Disease Control has released alarming statistics about teenage girls and sexually transmitted diseases.

It found more than three million teen girls are infected with an STD.

At least one in four teenage girls in the U.S. has a sexually transmitted disease.

By far, the most common infection is the HPV, or Human Papilloma Virus, which can cause cervical cancer.

Almost 20 percent of girls in the study, aged 14 to 19, have HPV.

Doctors say, at that age, many don't understand the long-term implications of an STD.

"Its kinda surprising because I'm that age too. But if you're gonna have sex, at least be safe," says Rosalynd Leal, 14, Pueblo Junior High Student.

Parents, as well as many in the medical community, believe screening, vaccination, and other preventative measures should fall among the highest public health priorities. A controversial vaccine for teens, targeting HPV, recently became available.

Why don't we teach our daughters not to dress so trashy and our sons to be more respectful to women. Give our kids guidance as to how to treat people and teach them that abstinence is the way to avoid these life changing diseases, but that if they make the choice to do it anyways they need to know how to be safe and what the consequences are. They need to know what kind of damage they can do to their bodies. Sex and pregnancy and disease are life altering and kids need to understand that "it can happen to them".

totally agree with the comments.. Abstinence only programs are a joke and unrealistic in todays standards. and do not work. What works is Better Safer Sex education , and should include the effects of not using safer sex practices. Parents need to wake up and get their head out of the sand.

Good point David. Let us not forget that most kids are no longer taught morals and values as well.
